Abras, Jumeira beach, and Dubai Mall - in one day

We had a really good day on Friday, during our 3-day New Year weekend, going to Dubai.  Finally, we went on the abras, or old boats that cross the Creek in old Dubai over to the other side of the water to the souqs.  Unfortunately, as it was Friday morning, the souqs were closed, but we walked through the alleyways of the Spice and Gold Souqs and it looked interesting.  We had lunch on the water (falafel, hummous, pomegranate juice, and Grace had shish tawook).  Then, we drove down the beach road to a beach in the Jumeria area.  We just found one and stopped.  We had views of the Burj al Arab in one direction and of the Burj Khalifa in the other.  It was beautiful.  And the Gulf was cool for a change.  The sand there is very pale and you can see the ground-up shells in it.  Afterwards, we went to Dubai Mall and saw the fountain again and had cake and tea for dinner (which resulted in Henry not feeling well that night.  That will teach me to be spontaneous for a change and just do what feels right!).  It was a good day and was an example of what we could do with friends and family who visit.  Old Dubai, the beaches and then New Dubai (and the Malls).
