Trip to Oman

We spent 4 nights in Oman last week - two in Muscat and two in Ras al Jinz at the Turtle Reserve.

We saw lots of babies - baby dolphins, baby turtles, baby goats, baby camels, baby geckos, baby frogs, baby donkeys - and we weren't even looking for them!

We saw Wadi Shab, a beautiful canyon with bolders, fresh water pools to swim in, a cave to swim to, sheer cliffs, hot sun.

We saw the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat which was ornate and tiled and, gasp, nicer than the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

We took a dolphin watching boat ride from Muscat and saw the dolphins jumping out of the water.

We walked through the Muscat Souq and had chicken tandoori at a streetside table.  Grace liked it alot and had the falafel, too.  We also got Chinese food in Muscat!

We swam in a large sinkhole and swam on many beaches - a white rock beach, a beach in Muscat with coconut palms and pink shells, the turtle beach with the big waves coming across from Pakistan and India, a beach in Sur with nice small waves and coral on the sand.

We took a night and a dawn tour out to the beach to see the mother turtles saying eggs in the sand and then covering the eggs for hours and them going back into the surf.  We saw lots of baby turtles and Charles put one (called Norman) personally back into the water.

And all in 5 days.  It was quite a trip, considering we could just drive there (5 hours away) and stop off and see the things we wanted to see.  Like the UAE, Oman is a contrast of old and Starbucks. It seemed to be a bit more colorful than the UAE though  - the mosques are enameled in lots of colors, the women wear colorful headscarves, there is colorful history (of the Portuguese invasions, forts, old towns).
