Charles and I went to an Iftar tonight at a Lebanese restaurant. We went last year, and made some mistakes - for example, we showed up too late and by the time we got there, most of the food was eaten. This year, we got there at 7pm, sat down, and did what the locals were doing - filling up their plates in anticipation of the call to prayer (and permission to eat) at 7.12 or so. When the time came, we were invited to start eating.
It was delicious, starting with dates and date juice (which had fresh pine nuts floating in it - I assumed these were baby dates, but no). We had Lebanese soup and mezze and then lots of rice dishes with meat. Finally, we had umm ali and mahalibiyya, our favorite desserts.
You don't wait around at Iftar, nor do you sit around and savour your food. You get eating and get out of there. I guess some people were going to pray afterwards and that may have been why. The entire mall was really empty the whole time, though. Maybe the action started later.
It was a nice evening/hour, though. Very pleasant and lovely food. Even for those of us who did eat and drink all day!
