We went to southern Sri Lanka in April. It's been a good year for travelling for us. Everyone wanted to have a quieter trip, so we went south from Colombo to Wellgama and just stayed there at a hotel (below). The weather was nice and we were right on the beach. It felt a bit like India, but cleaner. The first thing we did was go to a snake farm because Henry likes snakes so much.
We ate breakfast right outside at the tables.
The beach was good, too. The view from here is straight south and there is no land at all for thousands of mile til Anarctica (south from Sri Lanka).
We drank a lot of Ceylon tea there (which is the former name for Sri Lanka).
We went on a whale-watching boat and saw sperm whales, rays, and blue whales only about 30 feet from the boat. Very exciting.
This is a rooftop in Galle, a former Dutch colonial fort on the coast. It was really a wonderful place with small streets, fort walls, and restaurants.
A Sri Lankan curry - with many little dishes, highly spiced, often with pieces of cinnamon. Sri Lanka produces lots of cinnamon, but it is different from the cinnamon we eat in the US, which apparently comes from China and is a different plant. Sri Lankan cinnamon is less strong and can be broken into many little pieces, unlike the Chinese kind.
We also went to Uda Walawe, a national reserve, and went on a safari. We drove in one of these jeeps.
The best part was seeing wild elephants up close (we were probably only 10 feet away). The live in groups of females and babies. The males join the groups for some of the year and then go off on their own.
This was our breakfast every morning. It was great.
We happened to meet some people who live in Abu Dhabi and Henry really enjoyed talking to their son.
