Charles and I took the bus there and a train back, to Guangzhou, which is Canton, historically where a great deal of trading has been done. This is the home of dim sum and the Cantonese language. We just got off at a subway stop and started walking around, looking for a temple and a mosque I had read about. We found lively streets, European buildings interspersed with Chinese buildings, lots of small shops, trees draping down. We did find a temple, but not the mosque. What was most exciting was finding a dim sum restaurant.
